After years of writing, much research, hours upon hours of editing – and more than a few tears – Discovering Caroline is finally printed, bound and published! And to think – it all started at my dining room table with…
a laptop and an idea.
A sailor’s bunk on the Susan Constant at anchor in Historic Jamestown.
Finding movement restricted, she sucked in a horrified gasp – she was fettered – bound to a small wooden berth on what she surmised was a ship of some kind…Discovering Caroline.
Overgrown thicket at Cape Henry, Virginia.
Looking towards a forest filled with massive trees and thick brush abounding in tangles of vines and creepers, she felt a sudden urge to bolt – to dash towards the breaking waves before MacGregor weighed anchor – to promise him whatever he wished if only he would see her returned. – Discovering Caroline
A path through the forest at Yorktown Battlefield in early March.
Though the colony was in the last days of autumn, vines and undergrowth thrived in a wild mass of tangles beneath towering loblolly pines stretching heavenward, eclipsing the sun. – Discovering Caroline
A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Ms. Atley began her collegiate studies in the School of Business seeking an Accounting Degree. Yet, she soon found herself wishing for a more creative outlet. And so, it was not long before she enrolled in the School of Liberal Arts, where Ms. Atley earned a B.A. focusing on English, History and the Classics.
Her early years were filled with dance, music and sports like tennis, but reading and history were always hobbies, as well.
Oddly enough, it was in middle school when Ms. Atley told the class she was going to be a writer. Not because she thought she had any talent, or was ever told she did, it was just something she liked to do – to dream up stories. She honed her talent on her own, and over time her skills began to reap rewards. Her professors were some of the first to remark on her talent, and so, with their encouragement, she continued writing. After graduation, however, life took on a more serious chapter, as Sheila found herself a wife, mother of three sons, and an office manager – well, writing would have to wait!
Not able to stifle her imagination, she handwrote or typed loads of book ideas, strings of verses and paragraphs, dialogues, and lines of poetry to but set them all aside.
And as time progressed, and the last of her three sons graduated from college, she suddenly found herself able to settle into writing. Her first novel, "Discovering Caroline," was published in 2019. Unfortunately, just after publication, she suffered an accident that heavily curbed her ability to write. In fact, it would take over a year for her to take up the craft again – and those baby steps were fitful indeed, netting few results. As her health improved, she continued to beat out the keys until finally completing the sequel to her first novel.
Sheila happily lives in West Texas with her husband of thirty-five years and their chocolate lab.

I finished your book moments ago and had to tell you how much I enjoyed it. Your descriptions were so clear and precise, I could see every location. I fell in love with Lady Caroline and Captain Jones and hope you soon publish a sequel to “Discovering Caroline”!
Thank you so much, Karen! You’ve no idea how much that means to me. I’m very close to finishing the sequel and am hoping to get it into your hands in September – October at the latest!
